Three years ago, Cisco announced its north star: a goal to reach net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across our value chain by 2040, and in 2022 that goal was approved by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In 2023, we revealed The Plan for Possible , Cisco’s next generation environmental sustainability strategy.

But in early 2019, Amazon announced an industry-first for a delivery company: It pledged that half of all of its shipments would be net-zero carbon by 2030. The entire company (including transportation) will be net-zero carbon by 2040. It's been building out smart grid tech and testing out a virtual power plant.

In September 2023, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak came out with some disappointing rollbacks around net zero, pushing back the deadline for the combustion engine phaseout, slowing the uptake of heat pumps, among others. However, the PM did hit the nail on the head when it came to the UK grid infrastructure… it isn’t ready for net zero.
