At the Leaders Climate Summit in April 2021, President Xi Jinping announced that China would control coal generation until 2025 when it will start to gradually phase it out. Independent analysts Climate Action Tracker estimate China’s emissions to have been 13.8 GtCO2e in 2020 and set to reach 13.2-14.5 billion in 2021.
