Years ago when Google Earth was launched, we were all amazed at the levels of details provided. It was just very impressive. Every successful company and organization inevitably must confront a key question: Is what got us to where we are today helping us to move forward, or holding us back? We’re thinking and acting as usual, but something is misfiring. You may be dealing with what I refer to as “legacy thinking.” And, left unchecked, legacy thinking can pose enormous obstacles to your continued success—or worse.
These days, “talking about our relationship” means more than it used to. Now, it spells game-changing opportunity. For many, an organization’s relationship with its customers used to be largely limited to the point of sale. Thereafter, contact was a good deal more incidental—maybe a bit of anecdotal feedback or a response to a satisfaction survey, but that was usually it.
Certain mindsets and ways of thinking are genuinely habit forming. Taking years of successful growth for granted is one of them. Companies and organizations often inadvertently stunt their own success by making certain assumptions when it comes to growth. For example, let’s say your company has been growing by 8% a year for the past 10 years. It would be easy to assume that you will grow 8% next year.
