As we decarbonise the grid, and as our buildings become more energy efficient, we will reach the stage where operational carbon will no longer be the focus. In its place will be embodiedcarbon. Embodiedcarbon refers to all the CO2 emitted; not just from the time of construction and onwards, but the entire lifetime.
Forum Floorplan Advisory Board Register to Attend 2022 CALGreen Intervening Code Cycle: Reducing California’s EmbodiedCarbon The Division of the State Architect will present the 2022 California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen) proposals to reduce embodiedcarbon in construction materials.
Non-profit organisation’s report describes actions that would gear the buildings and construction sector towards a net zero future, through elimination of embodiedcarbon emissions. WorldGBC’s vision to fully decarbonise the sector requires eliminating both operational and embodiedcarbon emissions.
The finalists were selected from over 400 applications and 63 countries in spring 2023, and presented their ideas to an international jury of experts at the SET Tech Festival. These finalists were whittled down to a final five winning start-ups, each of which received €10,000 in prize money.
Sustainability must be part of the regular business conversation – beyond the town halls and the fancy presentations, it gets real when it’s in the discussions that happen when nobody is looking. A few years ago our Froth-Pak™ Spray Foam team knew they needed to reformulate the product to innovate a low embodiedcarbon solution.
Forum Floorplan Advisory Board Register to Attend Time Value to Carbon Over the years the building industry has been focused on the operation side of things. EmbodiedCarbon has become the focus as of late as a more holistic approach to a Building’s lifecycle.
Certified buildings are third-party verified after a 12-month performance period to be energy efficient, combustion-free (or actively phasing out combustion), powered by renewables, and built with lower embodiedcarbon than typical buildings.
After doing some research in Prague on carbon negative building materials, I have relocated to Portland and am currently working as a project manager/sustainability lead on the PDX Airport Terminal Core Redevelopment (TCORE) Project. Our industry was, of course, abruptly and majorly changed by the global pandemic.
Driving Continuous Innovation ESG regulations present businesses with an opportunity to reduce their ecological impact while fostering innovation to help them achieve their sustainability goals.
However, in the necessary drive towards a net-zero-carbon future, the present-day impacts of both insufficient and excess water—droughts and floods more frequent and severe due to climate change—on communities are at risk of being side-lined. Water is the new net-zero challenge.
The goal of green building is to create healthier, more efficient, and environmentally responsible built environments for present and future generations. This guide will help you understand the process of acquiring green building certification. What Is Green Building?
That question is anything but hypothetical in scientific laboratories, which present some of the most daunting challenges to decarbonization. To begin, there’s the embodiedcarbon in the building’s construction and component materials – labs typically use large amounts of concrete, steel and glass.
What was WSP’s role in helping WorldGBC present the business case for green buildings? As a leading consultant on the project, we worked with WorldGBC to help shape the report, provide technical input and gather evidence to support the business case by demonstrating how it changes in a high-carbon or low-carbon, healthy or unhealthy world.
And more recently a cross industry working group led by BBP, BRE, the Carbon Trust, CIBSE, IStructE, LETI, RIBA, RICS, and UKGBC have joined forces to champion a NZC building standard which looks to develop a single agreed methodology to develop NZC built assets in line with our nation’s climate targets. What’s needed.

Dave Duncan, PTC’s VP of Sustainability, presenting at Liveworx Seven months ago, we were pleased to invite PTC, a global technology company headquartered in the Boston Seaport District, to join the Sustainable Business and Enterprise Roundtable (SBER) as a charter member.
When I was in middle school, I did my first presentation on climate change, and I started becoming more concerned about environmental issues. Another thing that we're super proud of - our new commitment in terms of reducing embodiedcarbon by 40 percent by 2030. So that was a real pivotal moment for me in my career. [00:06:52]
The race to reduce embodiedcarbon : A panel of industry leaders will explore beyond the rhetoric and spotlight how embodiedcarbon can be reduced in the built environment. How to make existing buildings fit for the future : This session proposes a fitness regime for buildings for a climate-changed future.
For non-GMP spaces, use occupancy controls to ensure lights are off when nobody is present. Buildings contribute to 40% of annual CO2 emissions; a quarter of these emissions are associated with materials and construction , also known as embodiedcarbon. However, additional lighting strategies exist for increased savings.
The agenda for this event includes access to education sessions, live keynote, annual leadership awards presentations and to the sustainable products and services displays. Save the date for this years Forum which is being held in Sacramento, California on May 18, 2023. Exhibits Discover dozens of green products and services all in one place.
Education sessions will cover best practices, embodiedcarbon, electric vehicles and infrastructure, CALGreen and Energy Code updates, funding sources, building reuse addressing carbon reduction, whole building lifecycle analysis and more. Very well presented.”

The 1960s industrial precinct formerly owned by Phillip Morris has been transformed into a $200 million commercial community, sustainably retaining the existing structure throughout the build, resulting in savings of 19 million kg of embodiedcarbon. Adaptive reuse presents a great opportunity in this space.”
However, quantifying and reporting on Scope 3 presents a significant challenge for data centre operators. Vendors need to commit to reducing the embodiedcarbon of their product portfolio. This is mainly due to a lack of three resources: reliable supplier data, quantitative tools, and an accounting and reporting methodology.
There is a lot of embodiedcarbon in a building structure, especially in the concrete and steel. The report also argues that legislation must put a limit of embodiedcarbon per m2 of floor area that is brought into a building when it is constructed or renovated.
Nonetheless, she presented the city’s Climate Action Plan which includes 67 projects in mitigation and adaptation such as the promotion of distributed photovoltaic generation in facilities, hydraulic generation pilot tests with ALS University, and an economic fund to assist in the adequacy of housing. Representing the aviation sector was Ms.
Presented by. These included community engagement programs, an Indigenous-relations roadmap, a sustainable-construction training program, and R&D exploring the powers of life-cycle assessment to reduce the embodiedcarbon of building projects. “I
Businesses around the world are continuing to focus on sustainability in the race to net zero carbon emissions, and building construction and operations are critical areas where Australia can make significant contributions.
Here’s the thing: The pre-use manufacturing phase accounts for 70 – 90% of hardware equipment total embodiedcarbon. Finding a way of recovering and sustainably patriating/repatriating the millions of pounds worth of valuable PCB materials currently going to waste presents a huge opportunity for both the UK’s and overseas’ governments.
Zoom Regenerative 28 featured Louise Hamot exploring carbon in MEP based on her work, recently published in CIBSE Technical Memorandum 65: EmbodiedCarbon in building services, and insights from Slovakia with Marián Ontkóc on low or negative carbon building materials, crafts and tutoring. Zoom Regenerative.
While the market for geopolymer concrete is still in its infancy, it presents an opportunity to reduce carbon in a responsible way, rather than relying on waste from declining industries. Looking towards 2030 and beyond, carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) through CO 2 mineralisation is an emerging solution.
Learn how to streamline the contracting process using California’s GC 4217. Learn how to capture the Inflation Reduction Act’s Direct-Pay incentive for solar, battery-storage, and charging stations.
Signs of the UK’s renewed focus came just recently as the Government became the world’s first major economy to present a net zero industrial decarbonisation strategy. Launched in March this year, the drive to decarbonise industry forms a major part of the UK’s journey to 2050 net zero. … while a lot has changed, not much has changed.
