Following the recent building out of the UN-backed Taskforce on Net Zero Policy , governments are not short of advice or guidelines on ensuring their economies’ net zero transition is both ambitious and credible, with legal campaigners ClientEarth now releasing recommendations on avoiding ‘transition-washing’.

Two more recent examples: In 2022, the city of Baltimore announced its goal to be carbon neutral by 2045, building on its 2012 Climate Action Plan, and the Des Moines City Council in 2021 passed a resolution calling for the city to “achieve 100 percent, 24/7 carbon-free electricity by 2035 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.”
